This is a short presentation text for TV advert. It's describing the opening scene of superlatively beautiful countryside, which seems to be mainly rolling hills and green grass, and one beautiful tree. Any ideas of what "essences" means here? Presumably not scents... could it be species of plants, or is my brain addled? Thanks for any late night ideas!

elements of the landscape (perfectly arranged)
Hello,
I think that "essences" refers to the elements of this landscape.
I hope this helps.

You only have one tree, so it can't be just "trees" (tree species). It's the way the elements of the landscape are naturally arranged.
essences = elements of the landscape (the "elements" are the trees, hills, etc)

Note from asker:
Yes, this seems to make most sense to me too, unless something unforeseen turns up. Thanks! |

Comment: "Many thanks for all the answers. I imagine that "species" was probably what was meant, the word being chosen for its other connotations in French, sadly lacking in the English! "Elements" does the trick quite well I think. Thank you!"

I think it really means scents. Essence is also species (of trees), but I cannot see how that would fit in the context.

: agree. i think it actually does mean scents here as well.

: just seen your reference to species, but in an advert I don't think the scent aspect would be relevant

: All aspects described are visual - you can't smell TV adverts (yet - but I'm sure that'll come one day).

Or perhaps 'its contours', since the land is rolling.

(species of trees, etc.) i.e. the arrangment of the greenery
I know this seems prosaic in context but it could simply be the way the tress, plants, etc. are (artfully) dotted about. You do only talk of one tree but it could apply to the greenery in general.

thanks Helen I mainly wanted the first line, to show it could apply to 'arbres, arbustes et fleurs'. MInd you here it might be better just to talk about the 'various types of greenery' as the focus is on how 'artfully' they are placed!
