Danish term

sauna versus badestue

Danish to English Other Construction / Civil Engineering Letter of reference from construction firm
Both of the words "sauna and badestue" appear in the same sentence, as those they were two different types. I had always taken a badestue to be a sauna, so I wonder if anyone knows the difference. One of the sentences they appear together in is:

"XX var ansvarlig for opbygningen af alle saunaer og badestuer ..."

Thanks in advance!

sauna

Sauna and 'badstue' are synonymous, while 'badestue' is a typing error. Most likely, the author has other types of sweat baths in mind which are functioning slightly differently compared to a traditional sauna.

See the articles below for alternative types of baths as well as these:

agree Dana Sackett Lössl : Sauna is probably used in the more traditional sense here. Sauna is the Finnish term, while badstue/badstuga was the term adopted by other Scandinavians.

Well, sauna is only for saunas and is widely used in Danish today. In the 60's it was even called 'finnbad' at Danish schools, if they had one.

sauna v. steam bath

I agree with Torben and Dana that the two are generally synonymous. However, if you want two words, try sauna and steam bath. Tylö have both on their English web site....

"Badestue" or badstue

"badestue" doesn't exist in my Nudansk Ordbog. Badstue does, = sauna, as you say.
Found the following review of a resort where "badestue" is used, but I have no idea what the equivalent term is in English. The resort's own website doesn't really make it clear what the Danish reviewer was referring to.
