A woman in last night’s TV film was described as a “Hammerfrau”. I thought it might be a way of saying “a very attractive woman” from the context, but I'm really not sure.

Doesn't necessarily mean that's she's attractive. It means she's special in someway - perhaps a top athlete or someone who's achieved something extraordinary. Of course it could mean that she's absolutely gorgeous! :)

: I agree - I think "Powerfrau" would strictly be used for being a strong, independent woman. "Hammerfrau" is more generalized in my opinion.

: My first thought was "knockout" (in the erotic sense)--but the use (by guys) of "Hammer Typ" to simply mean someone very impressive (with no homoerotic connotations) shows your point's well taken.
