Douglas is, I think, on the right track here, although the wording he suggests is rather awkward. The sense seems to be "removing dross or baggage and demonstrating clearly" the values in question.

Your answer prompted me to go looking into etymologies to get past the financial associations, and "net/neto" both come from the same Latin root that gives us "neat" (crisp, sharp, orderly, pure) and "nitido" and it all began to make sense."
