German term
einen Text auflockern
German to English
Bus/Financial
General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
"Smileys können einen Text auflockern. In E-Mails mit geschäftlichem Inhalt haben sie aber nichts zu suchen."
I can't come up with anything for "auflockern".
My only idea: personalize. But that has a slightly different meaning. Your suggestions? Thank you!

add a whimsical touch
Smileys can add a whimsical touch to e-mails. But they have no business being in e-mails with commercial correspondence. ;-))
P.S. The smiley is optional. :-)

Comment: "I love it! Also the "no business ... commercial correspondence" in the second sentence! Really good! "

: nope -- if you shake up a text, you get a tossed word salad

lighten a text up a bit
to give it a more casual tone as opposed to what would be expected in formal business communication

: I prefer this version with "a bit" because "auflockern" does not have the thoroughness implied by the expression "lighten the text". I think adding "a bit" catches the exact meaning.
