Spanish term
diafano
Spanish to English
Tech/Engineering
Furniture / Household Appliances
Shelves and Cupboards
Further to my similar query the other day (am unable to add a note to the same), the client has informed me thus:
"DIAFANO ES UNA ESTANTERIA CERRADA O ABIERTA QUE PUEDE IR SIN PUERTA O CON PUERTAS O CON SOPORTE". I am still at a loss to translate it since the "doorless" option is now counted out. Any ideas?

open-plan
this is what I've used in the past, trying to be non-commital!
Ex:
Los muebles de 1 altura pueden ser:
Módulos de cajón, módulos diáfanos o módulos con marco-caja
1-rise units may be:
Drawer modules, open-plan modules or modules with a frame around the box-shaped units
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 11 mins (2008-09-23 14:44:33 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
always assuming it's not the name of the range!

: Ha! Good one. Vague, but right. Open or closed/door no-door, whatever, it's open-plan. And open has a similar meaning to daiphanous/airy/bright.

Comment: "Despite several reservations, I'm going with this, the dictionary definition, although I don't really like it."

Clear
I am referring to the RAE's definition:
diáfano, na.
(Del gr. διαφανής, transparente).
1. adj. Dicho de un cuerpo: Que deja pasar a su través la luz casi en su totalidad.
2. adj. claro (‖ limpio).
Also, Oxford does translate diáfano as clear as well.
Just an idea.

: I do'nt think you could apply the adjective "clear" to a piece of furniture

shelved cupboards
In Spanish furniture terms the term seems to have lost its connection to airy/brightness etc. (as your client has himself indicated) The furniture catalogue referenced below pictures a whole lot of perfectly ordinary office cupboards described as diafanos.

Your client's description is too inclusive. According to it, it can be any kind of cabinet. I made an images search and I found this: I hope it helps.

There is another possibility: In architecture, "diáfano" means "unsupported". A "bóveda diáfana" would be a vault with no supports other than the side walls. The supports, here, would probably (if needed) be placed outside.
If so, "open plan", as Deborah says, is the perfect translation.
