English term

abbreviation: CP

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Dear all,
I am translating a Project Data Sheet about a wind farm and, at the very beginning, I have come accross an abbreviation which I cannot figure out:

A. General information about the project
1. Project name
2. Size of the farm (MW)
3. Location (Location, *CP*, Country)
4. Next international airport.
....

What does CP stand for here?
Thanks in advance!

Merci Adam !
lexical Sep 15, 2008:
What is the German for post code? I don't know any German. It just seemed to me that the positioning of "CP" between "Location" and "Country" made that a possibility.
Adam Załuski (asker) Sep 15, 2008:
I am quite sure that the text was written by a German.

post code

If the original was written by a Spaniard or Portuguese (albeit in English) it might mean "código postal" - post code. Only a suggestion.
Peer comment(s):

agree d_vachliot (X) : Very likely.

non-translated abbreviation of code postal?

One possiblity (the fact that the text includes 'next airport', which is not natural English, suggests that it is a translation or written by a non-native speaker)
Peer comment(s):

agree lexical : I agree that the text appears to have been written by a non-native speaker.

'Coefficient of Power', or Cp

The averaged efficiency of power conversion, called the “Coefficient of Power”, or Cp, of several commercial small wind turbines in a specified location. It's measured in percentages, usually under 35%.

The Cp of a location is determined using a mathematical equation. Though the equation is fairly accurate in determining the output in watts to be expected, determining the Cp of a location is only as good as the data available.

The Wind Energy CP (Community of Practice)

I do not think this fits, as it is a fact finding initiative, meant to gather real data (from small groups of wind turbine users) for the US Government: Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) but here it is, their mission:

"The Wind Energy CP (Community of Practice) will directly contribute to the goals of the energy benefit area of GEOSS for improved management of energy resources."

Please refer to the REFERENCE URL for information regarding Cp or Coefficient of Power. The reference placed in my answer for the Community of Practice, which I do not think is the Cp you are seeking, came out huge!

CP is Spanish

for Código postal or zip code.

If you think about it, whenever you send out correspondence to another country you have to provide this information in this sequence. In other words:

Joe Smith
123 Beverly lane
Los Angeles California 12345 USA.

I hope this clarifies things!

Cheers!

Civil Parish

If it's in the UK, that's what it's most likely to be, based on the Ordnance Survey maps.

Dear Adam:

CP in English: some possibilities Civil Parish/ CP = County (see link below).

You mentioned the document was written by a German native-speaker, but the location of the wind farm is???/target audience???

Some observations:

1. Postal codes in Germany, Postleitzahl (plural Postleitzahlen, abbreviated to PLZ), so CP is unlikely to be in German..
