English term

if they do not have much skin in the game

Non-PRO English to Japanese Bus/Financial Advertising / Public Relations a part of audio presentation of income explosion guide
This phrase follows "I find a lot of people do not take anything seriously," I think "game" means financial transaction. But I can't understand "have much skin".
Is this a kind of figurative words? Does this mean goose bumps?

Discussion

Timothy Miller Jul 31, 2008:
This is really hard to answer without more context. I feel like it may mean something like "much experience" in the game, or close to "thick skin", like they cannot "handle" the game. Or it could mean many different things, including cinefils answer..

"skin in the game" でグーグルすると、説明がいろいろ出てきますが、あの warren buffet 氏の言葉のようですね。

http://www.answers.com/topic/skin-in-the-game?cat=biz-fin

A term coined by renowned investor Warren Buffett referring to a situation in which high-ranking insiders use their own money to buy stock in the company they are running.

Investopedia Says:
The idea behind creating this situation is to ensure that corporations are managed by like-minded individuals who share a stake in the company. Executives can talk all they want, but the best vote of confidence is putting one's own money on the line just like outside investors!

*** 例えば、ミューチャルファンドのマネージャが、自分が運用しているファンドに投資していないとか、あるいは会社上層部のメンバーなのに自社株を持っていないとしたら、そのファンドに対する信用度とか、会社での発言権も落ちるでしょうね。それと似た状態が、”People don't take you seriously if you don't have a lot of skin in the game" でしょうね。もしかしたら、higher-ranking insider 以外の人や、別の状況も含めて広義の解釈になるかもしれませんが、原意はこれだそうです。

skins はお金のことだと知っていたのですが、skin in the game は私も知りませんでした。

agree Timothy Miller : This makes the most sense, although I too have never heard of this phrase, although I did know that "skins" can refer to money.

意訳です
ここでのskinは、策、手段などを意味すると思います。
skin=表情/外見と考えれば、顔の数が少ない、つまり場面に応じて使い分ける表情の種類が少ない=手段が少ない、となると考えました。
