German term
Bedarfsdrucker
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Computers: Software
Schienentechnik, Software
I'm confronted ;-) with several loose, incoherent elements of a railway operation and control software manual the customer just sent for "urgent handling", and I just have the information that this software allows for 2 different printer types:
Typ 1: Endlosdrucker
Typ 2: **Bedarfsdrucker**
What is a "Bedarfsdrucker", and how would you call it in (U.K.) English?
TIA.

command printer
I think this is what I'd say; the "endless printer" is automatic, where the "Bedarfsprinter" is "as required", or on command only.

single-sheet printer
This is your typical modern printer that loads a page, prints on it, spits it out and then loads the next page, as opposed to continuous form printers where the pages are attached to each other (and often have holes on either edge).

on-demand printer

This means a printer not continuously running, but on demand.

Discussion
Stefani and Johannes, would you mind if I select David's answer? He was the quickest and the most helpful and available collegue here, even though I will suggest "on-demand printer" (and not command printer) to the client.
Normally, an "Endlosdrucker" refers to a fanfold printer, i.e. to the kind of paper used.
In my text, however, "Endlos-" (as opposed to "Bedarfs-") might in fact refer to "continuous (= automatic) printing", and NOT to fanfold paper.
My preliminary solution would be: Endlosdrucker = printer for continuous printing; Bedarfsdrucker: printer for on-demand printing (with a note to the author, of course).
What do you think?
