Russian to English
Tech/Engineering
hydrocarbon production

We'll say that this bed formed when the area was under the ocean.

Acording to the Russian Stratigraphic Classification and Terminology and two-volume Geological Dictionary:
Tolshcha - "group of strata" is an aggregate of sedimentary, extrusive, or metamorphic formations, or combination of them, which is characterized by some common features in lithology of the rocks or in character of their alternation.
Personally, I've used "strata" for decades with infrequent exceptions.
