Patricia Rosas (asker) May 24, 2008:
Thank you, M_Martin! Your answer was what I was looking for. For everyone else, thanks for the answers, too, and my apologies that I didn't look at the photo first and include an explanation about it being a photo!

documentary contribution/record

Apunte can also indicate "record", "entry", and if taken a little further, also "contribution". In this case it is a documentary contribution/record made by the author. If the image is a photo, it would make sense to use one of these terms or something similar, once sketch and note are ruled out. Just a suggestion, hope it might help in some way. -:)

Since the text refers to an image, it may be the 2nd meaning given in Oxford: 2 a (Art) sketch;

Yes
Note from asker:
I thought of that, too, but doesn't it seem odd for an image?
I'd thought of sketch, but I've got a pdf of the original book, and it's photo taken by the author. (I'd forgotten I had the images when I posted the question -- sorry!)

This (or The) image was documented by the author.

Another way of saying it I suppose.

documentary sketch

Are you sure it's a photo? Could it be a sketch that is very well done? According to the RAE, apunte can mean "Dibujo tomado del natural rápidamente." That would be appropriate here.
Note from asker:
Yup. It is a photo. Thanks for offering an answer all the same!

The image is one of the documents logged by the author/
in the author’s notations / references

No sabemos si alude a las notas del arqueólogo que investigó el sitio, o a las notas del autor de una crónica de viajes, o al redactor de una nota promocional de turismo. De cuelquier forma, la imagen es parte de un registro de documentos de referencia.
