Norwegian term
skadedyr
Norwegian to English
Other
Livestock / Animal Husbandry
Hunting
A report on hunting statistics in Norway includes the following:
Tre av bjørnene ble felt som skadedyr, og tre ble felt i nødverge.
The original translator has used the term "noxious" as a translation of "skadedyr", however is this the correct hunting term? I have considered vermin and pest control.

nuisance animals
Lots of Google hits for nuisance animals. I'd say you have to be seriously big and ballsy to call a brown bear a 'pest'....

If for some reason you don't like 'nuisance bear', you might go with 'killer bear'. It's actually appropriate for a bear that has already killed or maimed a domestic or farm animal (which is the definition of a bear as skadedyr), or even a human, in which case the NO term would be 'slagbjørn', and there would be open season on the furry teddy.

according to ifinger dictionary:
vermin, noxious animal, pests
botanikk: bekjempelse av skadedyr... (disinfestation, pest control)

Per Bergvall
: In this context, the term skadedyr is specifically applied to a bear that has killed or maimed domestic or farm animals. While a good translation for skadedyr in general, vermin doesn't work here.

True. US regulations use the term Predator Control, which may be helpful?

dangerous
Since three were killed in "nødverge" (in self defence) I would think that the word dangerous would apply. (Or harmful, I guess)
Certainly not vermin or pests, since they are rats or mice, rodents, etc.

: Dangerous would apply to the other situation - bears that threaten human life. Skadedyr in bear parlance (and yes, there IS such a thing as bear parlance) is a bear that has already inflicted damage on domestic or farm animals.

Hmm... Can't say I disagree with that, especially considering the Internet support

animals that could cause harm / harmful animals
"Skadedyr" er et begrep du må være forsiktig med her! Det betyr jo vanligvis småkryp.
Når det gjelder rovdyr som blir skutt, som bjørn, har jeg hørt ordet "harm" bli brukt flere ganger. Jeg foreslår derfor det ordet.
"harmful" kan også brukes, vil jeg tro.

People, however, misunderstand that the number of bears is excessively increasing and spillover bears come out from the forests to eat farm crops. As a result, they are exterminated as harmful animals.

Uttrykket "harmful animals" står i lovteksten (jfr. min første link ovenfor). Jeg mener dette er avgjørende fordi man åpenbart forsøker å gi en rettslig grunn for å felle bjørnene. Det er nødverge og "harmful animals" som her gir juridisk rett til å felle bjørn.

Per Bergvall
: All bears are potentially harmful. The Norwegian term 'skadedyr' as applied to bears should be seen as distinct from the established phrase of 'slagbjørn' - killer bear. Many wild animals are harmful - their behaviour decides how much so.
