Japanese term

競合遷移

Japanese to English Science Environment & Ecology
Here's the original sentence.

***は,抽水植物ヨシやヒメガマの動態を,現地観測・刈取り実験と生長解析により定量評価し,群落の拡大,競合遷移,人為的影響による減少量などを解明したものである。

What is 競合遷移?

Competitive movement???

If anyone can provide a translation + explanation, that would be super!

Thank you.

Ecological succession based on (produced by) competition

I think "competition and ecological succession" would work, too.

I'm guessing you already have a handle on the rest of the sentence. I can give it a shot if you like. The Wikipedia article does a better job of explaining it than I can, so I'll just refer you to it.

This is out of my field, but I'm procrastinating with one of my jobs right now. :)

survival of the fittest

From the sounds of things, Casey's answer would work better here. But if you are looking for a more colloquial translation, this term might be better known by general audiences. Just for reference.

neutral Roger Johnson : cool, sounds like marine corps basic training!
