saveur non consensuelle

French to English Other Livestock / Animal Husbandry Agriculture (sheepmeat sector)
Help! This text on the wonders of sheepmeat is getting worse! What on earth does "saveur non consensuelle" mean in this context? Disagreeable or unpleasant, maybe?

La viande ovine est une viande perçue comme traditionnelle, difficile à cuisiner, avec une saveur non consensuelle.

Thanks!

Discussion

MatthewLaSon Mar 25, 2008:
Please see comments in my answer about "acquired taste" I'm not sure that that is the intended meaning. If that were the case, they would have said probably "goût acquis/qui s'acquiert."
Nadia Ayoub Mar 25, 2008:
I agree with Mary, not everyone likes mutton, it has a very particular taste, that you either love or hate. Disagreeable in Webster's dictionary means "not to one's taste, unpleasant, offensive", which is not the intended meaning.
Joan Berglund Mar 24, 2008:
Disagreeable seems to be the closest translation - but I may be projecting my own feelings about mutton here.
maybe they mean it doesn't get much consensus??

not to everyone's liking

I like most of the offerings so far and wanted to offer one more alternative.

You could even translate it as simply "not well liked". Or to keep it more literal: "doesn't agree with everyone".

agree Bourth (X) : Brought up on it myself, en bon Kiwi qui se respecte, I am aware a number of people dislike the taste/smell, more of mutton than lamb maybe, but dislike nonetheless. Hence mint, thyme, rosemary, etc. maybe?

i.e. a flavour that's not to everyone's liking but that you can get used to.

taste disliked by some (as opposed to being liked by all/the majority)

Hello,

The idea is that the majority of don't like it. Even with popular foods, there are always those who don't like it. So, I think that saying "a taste disliked by some" would work, implying that it's not liked by the majority of people

I'm not sure that this is an "acquired taste" (goût acquis/ qui s'acquiert) because a typical food/drink can be enjoyed by the masses in a given country and still be acquired taste.

I think that "non-consensuelle" means not "unanimous" (loved by everyone).

I hope this helps.

Typo: Even with popular foods, there are always those who don't like it, thoguht (LOL)

"Acquired taste" means that most people won't like it. But, "non-consensuelle" seems to just mean that it's liked by everyone.

Example:

This green tea taste is not that one that everyone likes; it has a really grassy taste disliked by some.
