Последовал удар в сердце, потом в поддых

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
How would you say поддых in this context?

Discussion

Angela Greenfield Feb 27, 2008:
Если мы не знаем, чем били (напр., рукой или ножом) я бы удар перевела как "blow", а не "punch". ИМХО

Thanks
agree Michael Tovbin : in the GUT (singular). Guts - кишки или стойкость, смелость (he's got guts)/In everyday usage GUTS (pl.) does not exist in this meaning. So, it makes all the difference in the world. Try it out on an American.

Well, I agree if you insist on putting too fine a point on it. In everyday usage though it is a fairly negligible difference. Thanks for your comment.
agree Alex Koudlai : выражение очень употребимо, только в оригинале ведь был еще и удар в сердце

"Удар поддых" means that after a punch you couldn't breathe some time. It occurs when a punch goes to to the solar plexus.
Peer comment(s):

neutral The Misha : Your syntax is not good, not to mention that the solar plexus is located ABOVE that sensitive поддых area. The original never said solar plexus anyway.

About syntax you are right.

punch to the abs

Punch/blow to the abs/to the belly

"We all know Tigra can take a punch to the abs but she's never been hammered by such a larger brutish opponent. With her arms pinned behind her head, The Enforcer crashes hugh fists into the poor girl's belly, doubling her over, blasting the air out of her. Barely able to recover, she's violently yanked back to the upright position to recieve more punishing blows to the belly."

Thank you, Aleksey!
neutral Michael Tovbin : sounds stilted in English. "Punch in the abdomen" would sound better. "Abs" is only used in a sports context with reference to training or appearance.

I meant to communicate a slangy style of the original. Anyway both google and yahoo give a lot of references to the usage of "abs" not only in a sports context:)
