Russian term

на трех струнах/на двух струнах

Russian to English Art/Literary Music
Please excuse my lack of familiarity with the Cyrillic alphabet and keyboard. The above is my best approximation of a musical indication that appears on an older edition of a violin piece that my son downloaded from a free sheet music site. I'm not even 100% sure it's Russian; the original cover page is not included and the majority of the musical markings are the international standard (i.e., mostly Italian, a few violin-specific French terms).

Discussion

Kathryn Litherland (asker) Feb 11, 2008:
Yes, the notation makes sense in the context--the "on three strings" seems to be a suggestion to select a fingering that moves portions of a particular passage back and forth between the E, A, and D strings, rather than playing the passage all on the E and D strings. The passage marked "on two strings" is actually several measures of repeated D, which the notation seems to indicate is to be played in a pattern that shifts between open D string and 4th position on the G string.
Mikhail Mezhiritsky Feb 11, 2008:
Sure about the на трех струнах? It is not physically possible to play on three strings at the same time (assuming, you are using a modern bow).

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for the speedy response! Since I play the piano and speak Spanish, I'll leave it to my son and his violin instructor to figure out the finer points from here :-)"

double-stopped, triple-stopped

I play the violin, and this is how we normally talk about 'playing on two strings' or 'playing on three strings'. The 'stop' in 'double-stopped' refers to the fact that you 'stop' the string with the bow.

Web page:
Double stopped harmonics? Sautille in high positions? Up-bow spiccato? ... I would have to say triple stopped harmonics or unisons in quick time with left ...
