An auxiliary axle installed in conjunction with the rear axle(s) of a truck chassis. A pusher axle is installed ahead of the drive axles, thus shortening the length of the wheelbase.

Ist die Zusatzachse zwischen der Lenkachse und der Triebachse angebracht, spricht man von einer Vorlaufachse. Zur Verbesserung des Wendekreises kann eine Vorlaufachse auch als Lenkachse konstruiert sein. Ist die Zusatzachse hinter der Triebachse angebracht, spricht man von einer Nachlaufachse. Hier werden Reifen mit einem Schlangen- oder Zick-Zack-Profil benutzt.

RAS - Rear Axle Steered pusher/tag - Gelenkte Vor-/Nachlaufachse

-> Evtl. bezieht sich "pusher/tag" eben nur auf GELENKTE Vor-/Nachlaufachse. Aber genauer weiß ich das nun auch nicht...

I selected Ruth's answer because my own research showed it to be much more common in the heavy truck industry, as well as more specific. I found more examples of Patrick's terms in locomotive contexts. A tough call, though, and thanks to everyone who contributed!"

Leading axle/Front axle
Could "Vorderachse" be front axle, whereas "Vorlaufachse" is the leading axle of, for example, a multi-axle running gear?
