Although pensioners are not required to take out insurance for the shortfall in medical expenses not covered by the state, it would be unwise not to take out insurance, since you will have to pay a part of your medical expenses - roughly 30% - which could mount up to a substantial sum if you become seriously ill. The additional insurance at age 60 is going to cost around £380 a year, and it goes up as you get older. Treatment for life-threatening conditions, and medicines for serious chronic conditions, are free, but you need some extra cover.
