Burn the midnight oil 意思是工作到深夜或非常用功的意思,调过来就成了工作到深夜的人(midnight oil burner),即夜猫子。

Night owl确实是指熬夜的人,深夜不睡的人,但通常不是指熬夜工作用功学习的人,而是惯于晚上活动的夜生活者,与中文的另一个口头语“夜游神”同义。
而Midnight oil burner则指熬夜在灯下孜孜不倦地工作或用功学习的人,更符合BBW,linguist提问的原意。
