Although actually more abundant than many familiar industrial metals, the REE have much less tendency to become concentrated in *exploitable ore deposits*.
REEs sind rare earth elements, also Seltenerdmetalle. "Ore deposits" sind doch, soviel ich weiß, Erzvorkommen?! Ich versteh jetzt nur nicht, was das eine mit dem anderen zu tun hat?!

Bei der Logik kann ich auch nicht helfen, das steht aber so da. Normalerweise sind "exploitable deposits" die "förderungswürdigen Lagerstätten".

Nachtrag auf Deine Zusatzfrage: Soweit mir bekannt ist, werden die beiden Begriffe im D. fast gleichbedeutend verwendet, sprachlich würde ich aber sagen, dass "Erzvorkommen" wohl allgemeineren Charakter hat, während "Lagerstätten" konkreter ist.
Im folgenden Artikel wird "Lagerstätten" z. B. als Überschrift verwendet und "Vorkommen" imText selbst.
Im übrigen kann man "exploitable", wie der Text zeigt, auch mit "(wirtschaftlich) abbaubar" übersetzen.

That would be my approach.
As to what they have to do with each other: the REEs are very much more evenly scattered across the earth, rather than deposited in heaps or "ores", which when occurring in sufficient concentrations, are economical to work. This means that when you extract the element itself from the rubbish with which it is mixed, you can sell it for a price which is enough above what the extraction has cost you to give you a decent profit. This would be described as an "exploitable" (ore) deposit.
REEs by contrast are so thinly spread that their extraction costs a fortune. Although they may in total be present in larger quantities than the "common" elements, their extraction cannot be described as "economically exploitable" in general terms.
