I am trying to find an elegant way of translating this expression for use in a doctoral thesis. the sentence is as follows: "the presence of domestic slaves, while relatively small in number, had important implications for the formation of a "mentalidade escravista" in Brazil."

my suggestion has do to with your remarks that you want to emphasize the regime aspect, and I think "ideology" points to this immediately, at the same time that it means "mentality,"
