very strong attachment of children towards their mothers
"mamitis" is a very informal word to refer to children being to attached to their mothers, however this implies something temporary, for example when there is a new sibbling on the way some children may develop "mamitis", etc. It is a pun, "mamá" plus the suffix "-itis" normally used in several diseades such as hepatitis, apendicitis, etc
Example sentence:
Este niño tiene "mamitis", no suelta a su madre.

This is NOT a high-register term in English, just the right translation!

Note from asker:
I liked your suggestion but I was looking for something more informal. Thank you, I will keep it in mind. |

clingy (adj)
This is not a perfect translation as I don't think one exists.
Around the age of six months children become very clingy...

I just have to say that over-attachment strike me as much too strong a term for mamitis, considering mamitis is a perfectly natural phenomena that affects most babies at some time or times.

: This wouldn't cover it as any child can be described as clingy, without suffering from separation anxiety disorder//Look at the original text - "clingy" does not work here.//"Clingy" is not necessarily a negative term; here "mamitis" is..a sympt. of sep.

mamitis in Mexico at least, does not necessarily mean separation anxiety disorder

: clinginess is how I'd put it. It's clearly not supposed to be a "high register" or clinical term.
