Beg your pardon: история прерывалась (would come to a halt) - it's just bad Russian, isn't it - the smooth flow of history would come to a halt or get interrupted, history is bloody continuous.

I know "punctuated" isn't the usual translation for the verb but this expression is sometimes like this. See the reference below
