OK. I was also tryong to figure it out. The best I could come up with was that line is a typo for lining, so that it refers to the lining of a cell from the root of a carrot.

No, but I could not post the who quotation as a term or phrase. I am fairly sure that it does not all belong together. My question is really: How do the words in the quoted bit of text belong together? I cannot make head or tail of it. Once I know how many "terms" there actually are, I shall perhaps have to post questions to find out what one or more of the terms mean.
