Having some trouble with this phrase...
Due to the deregulation of the electric power industry, the intensity of competition that crosses the barriers between different types of businesses has increased.
This is somewhat awkward, and I am not sure I have conveyed the real meaning.
業種 and 業態 seems repetitive here. Should it be "types of businesses and business environments"?
Does that seem right?

I would say "categories or types of businesses" for "業種や業態" here.
But I think your first phrase "... the intensity of competition that crosses the barriers between different types of businesses ..." would have no problem.
"business environments" seems to express different meaning.
