Deutsch term

Stäbchen

Deutsch > Englisch Technik Textilien/Kleidung/Mode fiber/fabric production
Same sentence as last time, different term.

This is about the production of the fabric from the previously mentioned fibers. A knitted or crocheted fabric appears to be preferred, although woven works as well. It's a patent to cover all your fabric bases.

I knit enough to know that 'Reihen' are rows, but 'Stäbchen"? Is this another word for row or stitch?

It's a process patent. These terms were not in the glossary provided to the agency, which is why I'm asking. I don't know who filed it the patent: the headers are removed by the agency. Thus no website. There are no images attached to the patent. Honest, I did my homework before asking.
Arianna Tremayne Apr 20, 2007:
A sentence like this would be useful. It also might be helpful if you went back to the originator of the text / agency to ask for a picture, reference, etc. Who is the company producing the product? Have you had a look on their website?
Rebecca Garber (asker) Apr 20, 2007:
This consistently appears as part of the formulae: with X to Y Reihen bzw. Stäbchen/ with x Reihen und Y Stäbchen. Rows and ??
Ingeborg Gowans (X) Apr 20, 2007:
Stäbchen bezieht sich normalerweise aufs Häkeln, double stitch maybe
Rebecca Garber (asker) Apr 20, 2007:
They are specifically making cut-resistant gloves according to DIN EN 388.

Hi Rebecca. Could they possibly be referring to carpet? Just a thought ...

treble or treble stitch

If it is referring to s certain crochet stitch then it is a 'treble' or 'treble stitch' which is called 'Stäbchen' in German.

The reference shows one.

As far as context is concerned I might be totally wrong, though...

Hi Rebecca,
Sorry! I was just trying to help. The term 'treble' is not correct in this context. I have a DE>EN textile dictionary (Hohenadel) and the term there is 'Stäbchenanzahl' = 'Number of wales'. Back translated via Langenscheidt Technik confirms 'wale' to be a 'Maschinenstäbchen'. So this might be the right term.
gg = short for gauge.
Hope this helps!
Have a great weekend!

Dear Rebecca,

No worries! Here is a link where the word wale is used:
http://www.germes-online.com/catalog/26/83/328/page12/

In terms of 'Maschendichte' or 'Strickdichte' I think you would just refer to it as 'density'.

As far as I can tell you are writing about a fabric which is a bit like velvet or corduroy, with little things sticking out.
Note from asker:
Arianna, Sorry I was terse, I really wasn't trying to be, and I know you were trying to help and I really, really appreciate it. Wales makes sense with rows: can it be used to calculate 'Maschendichte'? (Another term I'm going to have to ask about.) Thanks for the gg = gauge And have a great weekend!!
