Hi Charles, after the initial surprise of your note and my immediate fear I had translated something wrong, I do appreciate your input. :-) I will definitely keep your advice and apply it to English translations. Thank you!
Charlesp Feb 28, 2007:
I should be more clear.

Of course in Norwegian it should be included, as Norwegian is simular to Swedish. However I was only commenting that in English it would be left out.
(Which is why my comment wasn't in an answer, but only in a note here - which I made as I noticed that you are in the US.

Simply trying to be helpful, in case you were also translating this into English.
Charlesp Feb 28, 2007:
The use of "so-called" in English is usually reserved for ironic or critical comments. For instance, "a so-called quality product."
The Swedish "så kalla" means known as, or referred to as.

There are quite a few instances of Swedish words which sound or are even spelled the same as English words, but they do not have the same meaning.
Solfrid Lokslid (asker) Feb 28, 2007:
I'm not sure I'm following where you're going... Are you saying I should have omitted it in my Swedish to Norwegian translation? This text, as far as I know, was pure Swedish from the beginning, and never English. If the Swedish copywriter thought it necessary to call something "so called" then who am I to disagree? The example I gave above was purely hypothetical by the way. I didn't want to give away the source text, which is already online. For me "såkalt" in Norwegian or "såkallad" in Swedish mean pretty much the same in English. It's not usually a complimentary term to use, but however this was a marketing text, and there must have been a reason why the copywriter used it
Charlesp Feb 28, 2007:
Yes, but most of the time this "phrase" should be omitted, as it has a different meaning in English.
