Je souhaiterais avoir une formulation idiomatique US ou GB pour "paiement par carte de crédit (pour les avances seulement)", les expressions "(for) down payments only" ou "only (for) down payments" ne semblant pas idiomatiques.

Well (in the UK at least), we would usually call such a payment a "deposit" (dépôt de garantie/caution, but also acompte/arrhes), at least in quite a number of fields, like holiday / hotel bookings etc.
I'm not quite sure, but it looks as if you are referring to some kind of part payment in advance for your translation services? If this is the case, I would be slightly less sure; I honestly can't recall having come across a particular term in an equivalent context.

I'd just like to make it crystal clear that I never, ever suggested "caution" as the EN translation, but only as part of the definition in FR. OF COURSE that would not work at all in EN!

: I'm with you too, but I'd drop the "Caution" if aiming at the US market. As an afterthought, you might try "Only for deposits" to avoid confusion with "For Deposit Only".

Merci, Jacques ! Yes, of course, I never actually suggested "caution" at all, for ANY market! I don't think there is truly any risk of confusion, given the context, and the position of "only" is prob. quite important

: JacquesB seems to have the answer. Caution is just FR. I've always had difficulty (I mean in the real world, not for translations) with the difference between avance & acompte, & I suspect I'm not the only one. Anybody there who can put me straight?

A payment made in advance is often referred to in the US as an "advance" or an "advance payment". The term "retainer" is used when a client hires a professional and agrees to pay him a fixed amount every month. I don't know if this is your situation as well or if you are simply referring to a one-time service.
