English term

by the same mail or with the same post

English to German Bus/Financial General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
which expression is better, i.e. more common

by the same mail, does that indicate enclosed with the letter or sent on the same day under separate cover?

Am totally puzzled, since I got different answers.

Thanks for you help in advance

Inge

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Feb 8, 2007:
IngePreiss (asker) Feb 7, 2007:
mit gleicher post maybe I should have chosen the single-language question section. Sorry for my mistake. My problem is that I am not quite sure, whether "by the sam email" means or "under separate cover" or "enclosed" because I only found contradictory information on this.
Anyway thank you for your help.
Steffen Walter Feb 7, 2007:
Are you just asking for the most appropriate English turn of phrase? If so, you should change the language pair to English>English.
BirgitBerlin Feb 7, 2007:
Isn't this actually a single-language question???
BrigitteHilgner Feb 7, 2007:
Are you writing for American or British readers? If Americans, I would definitely opt for mail.

"Under separate cover" meint 2 Briefe an den gleichen Empfànger.

allerdings:
by this mail = mit gleicher Post
under separate cover = mit getrennter Post
http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&lang=de&searchLoc=0&cmpType...
könnte durchaus mit by the same post/mail verwechselt werden.

Inge, neither of these options sounds to me like anything a native English speaker would use in such a context. However, if I were to ever encounter either phrase, I would understand both to mean "enclosed", *not* "under separate cover". Also, I have a feeling that "mail" as used here is a particularly German misuse of the term to mean "e-mail". There is no such thing as "a mail". It is either "a letter" or the like or, if we are talking about electronic communication, "a message" or similar.

I hope that helps.
