German term
gezielt
German to English
Art/Literary
History
museum/collection
Maybe it's late, but I can't wrap my mind around gezielt and what it's doing in the sentence. I want it to be a compound verb with gesucht and erworben, thus:
collections that were sought and acquired for London, selected in part by representatives
or
collections that were selected, sought and acquired, in part by representatives for London
Context: article on the British Museum, specifically the history of the antiquities departments.
Readership (Since Francis will ask :) ): It's an encyclopedia, but it assumes a bachelors degree from its readers and a good background in Classical History.

Comment: "Thanks to everyone who answered and commented. I went with Andrew's rather than Francis' (much as I like the specific targeting of statures for acquisition), I think 'w/ the specific requirements of the BM' is more neutral and fits the tone of the entire article better."

gezielte Suche
targeted research
This could work

: I don't at all see how it could work in this sentence, Fabio. You need to propose an entire rewrite or show how "targeted research" could modify gesucht and erworben.

Perhaps "search" instead of "research". Read what I've just written in the body of the answer.

specific/precise requests ... // targeting // systematically
i.e.
- often issuing specific requests/targets for its agents to seek and acquire
- often targeting specific items ...
- often finding them and acquiring them on a systematic basis
But there are definitely other (better) options ...
- often selecting specific items for "recovery" ...

U-hu, so Andrew also has "specifically". But I plead innocent, guilty only of having the window open so long ... blah bah. Anyway, "specific" and derivatives thereof certainly provide options here ...
- often dispatching agents with the specific task of ...
- often making the discovery/locating/localization and acquisition ... a specific policy

And in order to abvoid repetition, perhaps render the second "erwerben" with "secure possession of" or "bring home/back to London".

- some of which were singled out for acquisition by ...
- which were sometimes/often systematically targeted ... (thanks for the prompt, Bernhard)
Oh, and thanks for the exhaustive context, Rebecca ;-)

: Seems like the German is open to a lot of interpretation.

Ta, Kim. Yes, it's also not the best written sentence, including erwarb and erwerbern ...

: especially with "precise requests;" how about also: specifically targeted/specifically requested

Thanks, Bernhard. Fine, although I suspect a gerund will probably be needed there. Btw: my answer to your mail today also got a "Mail delivery failed" message 8-(

: i'd go for "systematically" here, i think they're trying to say these agents had specific orders to look for e.g. certain sculptures
