I believe, though not enough context is given, that "instance" refers to a single network/database/management progam that the whole company "sits" on globally. See the example below, refering to a company that is about to be run on a single Oracle instance (i.e. database):
"ViewSonic has been an Oracle customer for five years, and until recently, was running three Oracle instances: one on version 10.7, and two on version 11.0.3."
