Увидел - и пропал.

У меня сложился вариант "the bird was bagged". Приемлемо ли? А как ещё можно это выразить?

to Paul: you're right, however, we have the Russian phrase and it defines the register of the English variant pretty well, and it is quite far from being 'high' and IS quite colloquial.

Of the variants proposed, Olga's is the highest register with the others being slightly colloquial. So if the high register is important, that's the one you should use.

Прошу уточнения, по возможности. Прошу прощения, забыла упомянуть. У меня тут достаточно высокопарный слог. Тот, кто это всё вещает, уверен, что все обзавидовались описываемым страстям. Но вот русский вариант ничего, кроме иронии (мол, не верю я вам, друзья, те, у кого всё по-настоящему, об этом помалкивают), не вызывает.
Вариант Ольги, по-моему, подходит для высокого слога "fall desperately in love with her ". А остальные?

I agree with Alexander that PROPAL is a powerful metaphor.

It denotes a very deep emotion and indicates that what

happened to the person concerned had a very powerful

influence on his life or even destiny.

"Pozharishe " is the word he is using, and I have used

"desperately" - which was the closest I could get.



Cf also what the main character in "Ugrum - Reka" felt for Anfisa

(Mamin - Sibiryak) and what happened to him in the end as

a result.


It is the level of intensity that brings to mind

what Rogozhin and Knyaz Myshkin felt for Nastasya

Filippovna in Dostoyevsky's "Idiot" and what Mytya Karamazov

felt for the woman he loved.


Cf also what happened to Zheltkov who was hopelessly in love with a woman he could never have: Kuprin s "Granatovyy braslet".



It is "truly, madly, deeply" ...and desperately... that stands

behind "propal" and the translation has to reflect this.

Why not preserve the metaphor when there is a similar common expression in the target language?

agree Vladimir Dubisskiy : i would definitely use 'lost' here, To Paul: i'd work from the russian phrase here, and it means ..'lost' i.e.totally lost control of himself because of the passionate feeling towards her/ 'lost' works here.
