The verb 'to mesh' is 'engrener', but as so often in FR, I think this is one of those situations where it might be more appropriate to use an expression using a noun form, for example:
check that gears are correctly meshed
vérifier le bon engrènement des pignons
I would tend to use a word such as 'pignon' for 'gear'

Here, does it mean 'all of the gears in the system', or 'a particular pair of gears'? (in which case pignons might arguably be usable / better)

If you wanted to say "make sure the two gears are correctly meshed", would it feel natural to say "les deux engrenages..."? I have my doubts, but then I'm not the FNS!

: 'meshed' is more than simply 'positionné' / Ça pourrait être utile pour "aider Asker à choisir" --- c'est tout ! Ce n'est pas un critique ! J'ai bien expliqué mes doutes pour 'pignons', mais ceci n'est pas le terme principal en cause ici...

Inutile de mettre un "disagree", je pourrais bien faire de même pour votre réponse. Bien sûr je ne doute pas de votre compétence, mais si "positionné" ne rend pas totalement justice pour "meshed", c'est également le cas de "pignons" pour "gears".
