Wer sich unabhängig vom Verhalten der anderen Mitspieler immer kooperativ verhält, lädt dazu ein, ihn auszunutzen. Wer in naiver Vertrauensseligkeit auf jede Kontrolle verzichtet, ermuntert seine Mitspieler geradezu dazu, *ihre eigenen Interessen vor den gemeinsamen Vorteil zu stellen*.
My solution is not very natural-sounding.

By naïvely trusting in others and renouncing control we actually give encouragement to those around us to put their own interests before those of the group (or possibly 'of society') as a whole.

PS for 'renouncing control' read 'relinquishing control' or 'abdicating control'
