Used for a Provencal squash pie, the equivalent of pumpkin pie, but this vegetable isn't a citrouille... exactly what kind of squash is this? Butternut? Yellow? Acorn? Google hasn't helped at all.

Pleine de Naples
The vines trail to 4 meters and bear large, oblong and butternut shaped fruits which can weigh 10 to 16 kg and can reach 80 cm. The flesh is bright orange; the flavor is superb, rich and very sweet. The skin is deep green and turns tan in storage. These are beautiful squashes and perfect for areas with warm, long seasons. From direct sowing: 120 days. A very old Italian heirloom which was listed in America by Fearing Burr in 1863. Also known as “Carpet bag”, “Violin” “Beduin” or “Pleine de Naples”.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, Michele, I agree with your choice; it is "regionally appropriate" also. Thanks, too, to Rita Heller for the interesting (very!!) photos of squash which also shows this unusual vegetable!"

butternut squash

Common sense would dictate 'butternut squash', simply because it's the only squash I can think of that's more or less violin-shaped! Do a google IMAGES search for 'butternut squash', 'acorn squash', 'yellow squash', etc, and you'll see what I mean.

Fiddlehead squash

Charlotte could be right but according to what I found on the Internet, butternut squash is called courge butternut (slight buttery flavor). Fiddlehead fern exists in the US 'tho.

Maybe the following link will help. There are recipes for courge violon but it's not translated. Well, only as violon marrow which isn't much help.
Squash is US. Marrow is UK.

Or there is this possibility which covers all kinds of squashes:

It just doesn't seem to be translated anyway unless it's pumpkin neck squash:
