Although the dictionary has given me choices for this, neither penitentiary nor penal institution sounds right to my English ear. I'm wondering whether to just use 'prison'.
My text reads 'preventief gedetineerd in de penitentiaire inrichting X. Huis van Bewaring Z te [place].'
Or maybe use the abbreviation PI the way we use HMP?

Correctional Institution might be a possibility if you want to go for a general term.

: I would also prefer penitentiary institution, especially because the Dutch tem "penitentiaire inrichting" is a broad term including "gevangenis", "huis van bewaring" and "inrichting voor stelselmatige daders".

Discussion
Huis van bewaring is voorarrest, so before one is being convicted. I would not translate these terms, as the judicial system is so different in each country, but put an expl.[-]
