Spanish term

espacio común

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Higher education, University education
Hello dear colleagues:

This is a name or term that comes up several times in different essays I have been translating, all of them related to university education. The essays are about a group of Mexican universities that have recently formed a consortium of universities. When they refer to their consortium they name it their "espacio común", in other words, the forum where they can share their views on educaton, work together, establish collaboration networks, etc. I don't think "common space" makes any sense in English, but I'm not a native English speaker, that's why I need your help once again. So far, I have translated "espacio común" as "forum", but I'm sure you will have better ideas.

This is the title of one of the essays:
"Hacia la construcción de un espacio común de buena calidad"

My version:
"Towards creating a high quality forum"

disagree jrb : sorry Sergio, you can't really use that because it's a virtual, not a physical, space

In this context of collaboration and exchange of ideas, your suggestion (of "common space") sounds fine. :-)

forum

I still put my vote behind your original suggestion. There's something about including "common" in your sentence that isn't propio del inglés. I agree that the word "forum" is the most appropriate here, and I think it already includes the concept of "common". I would make a few changes, translating "Hacia la construcción de un espacio común de buena calidad" as something like "Creating a forum for excellence."
Peer comment(s):

agree Martin Harvey : Shared forum would also do, but for this one forum for excellence sound good enough.

"common area"

Si comparas esa frase con el caso de edificios de apartamentos que tienen facilidades que son para el disfrute común de todos los residentes, se le llama "áreas comunes" ("common areas" en inglés).
Tal vez podrias usar ese término utilizando las comillas, ya que es el mismo concepto, no necesariamente una traducción exacta.

Es sólo una idea que puedes considerar.

Buena suerte!

joint forum

I think in this context I would use the adjective 'joint' rather than 'common' - it just sounds more natural to my ear and stresses the idea of cooperation between different bodies with common aims.
