austrian fieldcress, bedstraw, beggarticks, bitter wintercress...

English to Spanish Science Environment & Ecology nutrition, manufacture of supplements
Hi guys,

Rather than a single specific term I'm looking for a glossary or similar source where I can get the terms in Spanish for all sorts of weeds, as I'm translating a herbicide manual. Takk fyrir!

A good source that I use is "Diccionario de Plantas Agrícolas" by Enrique Sánchez-Monge y Parellada. The publisher is the Ministerio de Agricultura of Spain, ISBN 84-7479-098-0. The book is 25 years old, but it has the names of thousands of plants, including many medicinal and folk herbs, in Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician, German, French, English, Italian, and Portuguese. The main body of the work is listed by scientific classification (genus / species) and the indices in the back contain the common or folk names, separated into sections by language. Many alternate names are provided.

The most common problem in this type of work is that the common names of plants and herbs are notriously varied and regional within a given language. For example, most of the names mentioned in your posting are not found in the English index of this book. Folk names of herbs are particularly troublesome in all European languages. Sometimes the only way to find a translation is to somehow obtain the scientific classification or an alternative name of the herb. If you can get that, this book is really very useful.

The address of the publisher in 1980 was:

Publicaciones del Ministerio de Agricultura
Secretaría General Técnica
Servicio de Publicaciones Agrarias
Paseo de Infanta Isabel, 1 - Mdarid (7)

On second thought, if your subject matter is herbicides, you might not find much help here, since this reference is for plants that are edible or useful to man. However, you might check with the the ministries of agriculture of Spanish-speaking countries. I would be surprised to find a readily available source on-line in this specific area.
