German term

die sinnlich fassbare Welt

German to English Science Science (general) brain research
It's in a magazine article about brain research:
Im Gehirn arbeiten Milliarden von Nervenzellen ohne jede koordinierende Oberaufsicht in jeweils getrennten Arealen der Großhirnrinde an jeweils gesonderten Aufgaben – und vermitteln dennoch zusammenhängende Wahrnehmungen der sinnlich fassbaren Welt.

... coherent perceptions of the ???

I'm just out of good ideas. Thanks for any suggestions.

Discussion

Lori Dendy-Molz Aug 1, 2005:
You're right. None of these collocate very naturally. What they're describing is really just "the perceivable world". That might work, though it lacks the (implicit) "sensory" bit.
Non-ProZ.com Jul 31, 2005:
Ah! (@Andrew) You may be on to something with "as discerned". I may just go with that. I wanted a preceding modifier along the lines of "sensuously/sensorily perceptible", but I just don't think any of them collocate terribly well. : (
Non-ProZ.com Jul 31, 2005:
@Andrew Yeah, I think "materially" just falls short somehow ...
Non-ProZ.com Jul 31, 2005:
Incidentally, I did see other Kudoz questions for sinnlich xxx but don't care much for any of the solutions offered

German term (edited): zusammenhngende Wahrnehmungen der sinnlich fassbaren Welt.
Selected

a coherent image of the materially perceptible world

though not sure that 'materially' does full justice to 'sinnlich'

not bad for the \'fassbar\' (tangible?) element though :-)

OK, to avoid the repetition of \'perceive/perception/perceptible\':
\"coherent perceptions of the world as discerned/interpreted by the senses\"
Peer comment(s):

agree Ulrike Kraemer : with "as discerned by the senses" :-)
24 mins
agree Kieran McCann : with 'coherent image'

neutral Michele Fauble : The point of the passage is that coherent perceptions are produced by the brain - interpretation is NOT by the SENSES. // Subject matter knowledge is often essential for determining the right translation.

Thanks for your five (one for each of the senses?!) peer comments and changed comments // I couldn't agree more, Michele. Charlatans lurk around every corner. Unfortunately, I am myself occasionally told that I have neither 'sense nor sensibility' :-)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone for all your suggestions. All are quite viable, but wanting to keep "coherent perceptions" and avoid repetition, I went with "as discerned by the senses". Y'all keep up the good work now!"

agree Kieran McCann : the world (as) perceived by the senses

neutral Michele Fauble : The point of the passage is that perception is a product of the brain (so best to avoid "perceived" by the SENSES).

phenomonal world / world of perceptions

If I had to choose, I would choose "phenomonal world". But "world of perceptions" is also O.K.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michele Fauble : This describes the 'coherent perceptions'. 'Die sinnlich fassbare Welt' provides the sensory input for the 'phenomonal world / world of perceptions'.
