Dutch term

curious grammar?

Dutch to English Other Other
This is what I have written down, but it seems nonsensical in its current form (I have reproduced the punctuation exactly):

A: wat ga je morgen doen?
B: weet ik, bij X toch?
A: ooh oke bij X
B: X, hoe komt Y dan zo bij jou.
A: Ja.
B: Dat meen je niet.

The bit that seems odd (to me, at least) is the "X, hoe komt Y" etc. being followed by "yes" as an answer.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jul 5, 2005:
My first draft was along the lines of Crionn's answer - i.e. that there is some punctuation missing. I don't think X is party to this conversation at all.

What seems strange to me is that in sentence no4, B is addressing a third person

but he/she might have meant this:

X, hoe? Komt Y dan zo bij jou?

Which can be interpreted as "X, what do you mean, is Y coming over to your place in a moment?"

If X is no part of the conversation, the meaning might be:

X? hoe? komt Y dan zo bij jou?

(when I chat I often let go of the shift key too early, so my question marks often become commas as well)
But it\'ll remain an educated guess I\'m afraid

agree Davorka Grgic : Correct!

agree Alric van den Broek : I share the analysis: A question "hoe?" as slang/ short for "hoezo?" = "what do you mean/ why do you ask/ Is it because Y is coming over?"

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This was what I finally went for, with a footnote explaining that it wasn't entirely clear from the context."

doesn't make any sense to me (the 'yes' bit OR the first answer)

persons chatting ----

Its one person chatting and you dont know what the others answer.

First A and B and than X joins in.

Hope it helps.

very awkward

The entire conversation doesn't seem to make much sense. B's first reaction to A is also strange.

The only thing that would make sense to me is that 'ja' would be the answer to the question 'komt Y dan zo bij jou?' but unfortunately that still doesn't explain the first part of that particular sentence.
