Habe schon überall gesucht und nichts gefunden. Incl. KudoZ gibt Sämaschinen an, das muss aber in einem anderen Kontext gewesen sein, denn wie können Sämaschinen anschwellen.

Could this be a spelling mistake? "boots" instead of "roots"? Or do have plant stalks have "boots"? "The flag leaf...stage" is certainly set in parallel to "boots...stage", so the word in question should definitely refer to a part of the plant indicating it's state of growth.

Punkt 45 G in der deutschen, an die Zadok-Skala angelehnten "BBCH Deutsch - Skala", s. 2. web reference, PDF S. 12). Diese Wachstumsstadien sind Anzeiger für eine zeitgerechte Ausbringung bestimmter Pflanzenschutz- oder Düngeprodukte.
