If I had my choice of texts to translate, then I think it would be something in the areas of politics, current affairs, sociology, medicine or something like that. But there are really almost no in-house jobs in those fields. And because my current job is reasonably well paid, it's hard to leave.

Some like the violin, others don't. Some enjoy knitting. For translations, I need lots of cigarettes (1-2 packs) to slow my body down and lots of coffee (2-3 liters) to keep my head awake. When I quit one day, I will publish the approximate total non-MT volume I've translated & show proof to visitors. It means I'm very tolerant (complaining but keep going). Others aren't. To be fair, it used to be quite lucrative once, and we got trapped.

Have you ever researched how much money you could make as a freelancer? There was a guy here not long ago who was boasting that he 'broke the record and made 100k in a year by translating' and most people here were waxing lyrical about his exploits. Just food for thought.

... but wasn't it 100k THB in a year? And guess, how many translators, be it native or non-native speakers of English, claim to be able to translate from German to English nowadays?

I believe it was USD as the guy was located in the US. He was translating from Norwegian and Russian, if memory serves. Granted that the German to English market might be a bit oversaturated, but if he adopts the 'right winner mentality' (you know, along the lines of "screw the tests, let them kiss my backside if they feel worthy and privileged enough to have me on their roster") he could stand a fighting chance of hitting that mark soon enough.
