What should I do, how to establish myself?

You should go for finance - specifically, subprime mortgages and/or stock markets. Your knowledge of poker and sports betting will definitely come in handy, and from what I see, there's no shortage of esoterics, fantasy and mystics in these "areas of specialization".

Look at your interests Sep 29, 2008

I'm surprised you say your interests don't help - I'd have thought science and perhaps psychology would be at least a couple of areas you could pursue.

At the end of the day I think you have to be guided by the areas you can work effectively in, whether or not they are the ones you perceive to be most in demand. Far better to be a first-class scientific translator than a mediocre legal one.

Best,

Karen

You only need a few clients Sep 30, 2008

My adivce is to stick with what you know best. You'll enjoy your work more and produce higher quality. You only need a few regular clients to keep you in busness. Send emails to gaming machine manufacturers like IGT to try to get direct clients in that subject. If you like astronomy, contact telescope manufacturers.
I have a moderately rare specialty (chemistry) and I have plenty work. Most of the agencies I meet/write to don't need me, but those who do have that kind of work, they REALLY

I noticed that you don't have a tag line on your profile page Sep 30, 2008

Maybe this would be the perfect tool for advertising your specialty. When searching for translators, the name and the tag line are the first things to show up.

Sorry for my bluntness... Sep 30, 2008

I don't think you should go for any of those "demanded specialities". I don't think you can offer quality work since you sound like you are not any better versed in it than the average person.

By the way, you shouldn't choose your specialization based on how much money you can make off of it. You should just stick with specializations you actually understand. Otherwise, I would most likely be an astronaut at the moment - and wouldn't live long. You should stick with poker. For every

Where do find all these?:) May be I lack the basic knowledge of how to find a job and earnings for translators, because I base my judgement on job sites, which usually demand technical and juridical translation.

ProZ is useless for finding clients, because the competition of "English-Russian" translations is enormous. Once there was a job posting without any restrictions on English-Russian translation. 156 applications!!! Of course I don't have an experience with the help of which client will prefer me.

What's wrong with poker-translation? Sep 30, 2008

Poker is a very sought after speciality nowadays. There must be hundreds of poker-sites on the web.

Youre in the rong biznis Oct 3, 2008

Hi slavaentp,

As others have said, stick to your specialisations, and I think you'd make a better living by actually applying your insider knowledge. You could use your knowledge of poker to go and play with the big boys and clean them out, or do it on-line. Spend hours in the casino with a pen and notepad recording results, and do the same. Write horoscopes the rest of the time, and/or a book like The Secret, as discussed in another current thread. Simple.
