English to Portuguese: Ecological relationships / Relações ecológicas General field: Science Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Source text - English Organisms occupy what are called niches. A niche includes the physical space in which they live, how they use the resources that are in that space, and how they interact with other organisms in that space. The interaction among organisms within or between overlapping niches can be characterized into five types of relationships: competition, predation, commensalism, mutualism and parasitism. The last three subtypes are classically defined as relationships exhibiting symbiosis, but predation and competition can also be considered as forms of symbiosis. Symbiosis refers to a close relationship in which one or both organisms obtain a benefit.
Although we generally think of predation as one animal catching and eating another, there are biological variations. In cannibalism, a predator feeds on its own species. Pack hunting predators, including wolves, hyenas and army ants, band together to increase their chances of success. In another form of predation, parasitism, the predator doesn’t always kill the prey. Parasites use other organisms for food and shelter. For example, tapeworms can live inside animals, such as cattle, pigs and humans, drawing nutrition from the prey. Also, certain animals, such as birds, snakes and monkeys, engage in nest predation, stealing and consuming unprotected eggs and newborns.

Translation - English (Assembling a protocol for the massive production of copepods (Mesocyclops longisetus): comparing types of algae and fish food).
This project consisted in creating a protocol for the massive production of microcrustaceans known as copepods, since they are organisms with an important role in the biological control of vectors, especially mosquito larvae.
Ovigerous female copepods were selected from pre-existing females and transferred to controlled water tanks, where the reproduction was analyzed. We applied different feeding treatments during the reproductive cycles to test the efficiency of each diet. Therefore, we would be capable of identifying the best way to cultivate and reproduce these animals massively.
We analyzed the data applying descriptive, univariate, and multivariate statistics to detect variation tendencies. The production protocol was initially based on literature about other crustaceans. We observed a preference for living food. However, the massive production of Cladocera is complex. More studies are necessary to create a complete protocol on copepod culture.
