Russian term

фаза

Russian to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Animation production
An animation director is describing a dream, in which he is in the studio, working, and doesn't know what to do:

- анимационные сны, что я делаю сцену и совершенно не знаю о чем, как, иногда я делаю фильм и тоже не знаю ни одного кадра - у меня лежат фазы все, Я просто в холодном поту просыпаюсь…

My question is, what are фазы?

Discussion

DTSM Jan 7, 2010:
@EADB I'm gettin less sure that an English speaking animator would understand "phases". Is there an English slang word for this "фаза"? It seems that we do need an American animator here.
Ethan Bien (asker) Jan 7, 2010:
@zolotopup I absolutely agree that it's jargon. But I'm not sure an american animator would understand the phrase "phases lying around". Of course I could be wrong. Maybe an American animator will write in and set us straight?
Yuliya UA Jan 7, 2010:
An opinion... I think you shouldn't go much into detail here, studying all the elements of cartoon production. Key drawing is the most general of all and seems to cover both poses and frames (I don't think "frame" is appropriate, though, as the director is not quite aware of what's going to come out of his work. He only has "samples of how characters can move when they do certain things").
DTSM Jan 7, 2010:
I think фаза is а professional jargon word here. It sounds as vague to a Russian-speaking layman as "phase" would to an English-speaker who is not an animation professional. The guy could mean "key drawing" or "frame" but he chose "phase" to express to it. Are you taking this into consideration?
Ethan Bien (asker) Jan 7, 2010:
Leaning towards key drawing, since it's clear from the context that фазы in this case are tangible things. That's why I passed on "phase", although it's a more obvious translation.

An important innovation in the recording of movement was Eadweard Muybridge's Zoopraxiscope. Made in 1879, the device used many photographs of "successive phases of movement" to replicate motion. These images were obtained through the use of multiple cameras.

Light from above intervenes with light from below to illuminate a registered stack of
paper (at least three sheets, often more) containing the sequential ***phases of movement***.
The animator clamps the corners of the sheets with the fingers of one hand while drawing
with the other. The lighting and paper grain provide subtle variations in translucency and
stroke density to suggest a palimpsest of the action.

I think the author uses “фазы” as professional slang for “кадры” (“frames” ) to avoid extra repetition of the latter. S/he first uses “кадр” in the phrase “не знаю ни одного кадра” meaning “I don’t know any scene/episode”. Then, to avoid excessive repetition, s/he chooses “фазы” over “кадры” meaning “series of pictures/images” by that. The text now sounds more beautiful and more professional.
