Rachel Douglas May 25, 2009:
Still wondering what's the diff (in this original) Thanks, Anna & Victor. But, what's the difference, then, between аварийный and спасианный? If the latter is going to be "salvage", what's the former?

I've seen car lot auctions where junked cars were for sale. I think one of the refs I gave was an auction outfit trying to acquire both kinds (driveble, and not). But, that's a U.S. context, of course.
Anna Fominykh May 24, 2009:
Good references, Rachel What you described about selling your old vehicle to the junk yard for steel proves that junk vehicles belong at the junk yard, not auto auctions. Salvaged vehicles, on the other hand, are vehicles that have been salvaged from wreck and written-off (“списанный”) by insurance, meaning they were damaged in a car accident and were too costly to repair (totalled). If these cars are then sold at an auction, they would be labeled as “salvaged”, but, if it is decided that the cars should be instead sold to the junk yard for scrap metal, they will be labeled junk. Also, see the link http://vinoff.ru/faq/168-salvage-auction-record.html (Salvage Auction Record (Аукцион списанных машин)

"salvage" vs. "junk" See treatise below, under my entry.
Anna Fominykh May 24, 2009:
The official term at auto auctions is "salvaged" "A Glimpse into the Salvage Auto Auction Process

Salvage auto auctions are special wholesale auto auctions that serve car dealers across the world. Car-Tech Auction, Inc. is a dealer auto auction that does the same, and offers wholesale auto auctions on-site and via internet bidding.

Customer Service Has No Finish Line Car-Tech features wholesale salvage auto auctions for dealers.
At Car-Tech's car auctions in New Jersey, we sell insurance vehicles that have been damaged from collision, flood, theft, fire, and other losses. At our salvage auto insurance auction, we also sell rental company vehicles, charity donation vehicles, and repossessions."

junk vehicles

"salvage and junk vehicles"

Where "junk" or "junked" refers to "списанная".

I'm pretty sure that "wrecked" cars are ones which were totalled, "salvage" cars are very badly damaged, and the ones which have been formally written off, retired, etc., are "junk" when it comes to reselling them.

Thus, the "аварийная" would be "salvage" and/or "wrecked", and списанная - "junk[ed]".

More, on the definitions:

"So what is a salvage car auction? Basically most of the vehicles brought up for sale at a salvage car auction are from insurance claims. When a car is involved in an accident, the insurance company takes a look at the damage to the vehicle and other factors such as the age of the car and the Kelly Blue Book value. If the estimated cost of repairs to the vehicle is more than the value the insurance company assigns to it, then the vehicle is considered totaled and the insurance company buys the vehicle and salvages it. The interesting point to all this is that insurance companies then sell these cars at a salvage car auction and these cars can be bought very inexpensively. ... Some vehicles with very minor damage are considered totaled due to the age of the vehicle or the expense of a particular repair."
http://www.thefreelibrary.com/The Purpose of the Salvage Car...

Well, so much for fine distinctions between "salvage" and "wrecked", respecting which one "totalled" vehicles are. The nuances of those terms varies, between their use by insurance companies and by the general public. But I'm pretty sure both would be "аварийные".

Whereas a "junk car" was not necessarily in an accident or damaged by some other external effect, but has just broken down irreparably and been written off.

"WHAT IS A JUNK CAR?
To be classified as junk or nuisance, a vehicle must satisfy three of the following requirements: The vehicle is 3 years or older; extensively damaged; apparently inoperable; and is equal to or less than its value as scrap metal."
http://www.laketappsnews.org/JUNK CARS.htm

So much for sources! The real reason I think I know this, is that four years ago my car was in a crash and was considered totalled. We got insurance money for it and the auto body shop took possession of it as a salvage car. But last year when the brake lines and a few other things gave out on my 19-year-old pickup, I wrote it off and took it to the junkyard, getting a few hundred bucks for the steel. For them, it was a "junk" vehicle, not a "salvage" one. So that's why auction places advertise "salvage AND junk" cars.

Thanks. If that's really the case, then forget "junk"; I thought "списанная техника" was truly done for - непригодная, лом, утиль. I still don't think "salvage" is right, being specific to post-accident write-offs. "Salvage and junk" is common combo.

Not to be confused with storing a vehicle! You cannot put your vehicle back on the road after discarding it unless you pay for a mechanical inspection in a garage accredited by the SAAQ.

If you plan to no longer use your vehicle, you have two options: you can place it in storage, or you can discard it. There is a big difference between the two procedures, but as you will see, it is quite easy to understand
