German term

Außenkirche

German to English Other Religion
Please, could anyone tell me what "Aussenkirche" means? It is in a text about religion, about being a believer or not.
The context is pretty unclear and no dictionary has given me a clue!

Discussion

EuMC2 (X) (asker) Dec 7, 2008:
Clarification Dear colleagues, thank you for your attention; I apologize for having posted my question twice, I had the impression it doesn't appear on the Kudoz.

Now, this is the context:

... da er noch ruhig lebte in der Außenkirche und den rauschenden Wind hielt für Meinen Geist und den Donner für die Stimme des Lebens im Sohne ...

(the Austrian visionary Jakob Lorber)
Ken Cox Dec 5, 2008:
Thanks, David. In the same way that IBM offices used to have a sign on the wall with the motto 'Think!', translators need to have a (mental) sign with the motto 'Context!'.

David Moore (X) Dec 5, 2008:
Harapalba: first, welcome to ProZ. When you ask questions on this site, it is expected that you give context, because that is the ONLY way to understand many terms. Please give us at least the sentence or the gist of the passage, if this is a heading, to
Ken Cox Dec 5, 2008:
It would probably help to provide some context (i.e. at least a full sentence in which the term occurs, possibly more related text, information about the general nature of the text, author, readership, etc.)

outer church

I found Buitenkerk in Dutch and outer church in English as synonyms for Außenkirche. Here is a possible explanation of the meaning:
"The name Buitenkerk (buiten = outside) reminds of the time that this part of Kampen lay outside the walls of the town."

I just found another link - http://book4blog-becomingwisencompassionate.blogspot.com/200... - where outer and inner church are contrasted. Maybe that fits your context better?
Example sentence:

Francesco Salviati, The Blessed Virgin and Child with Saints (c. 1540), outer church of Santa Cristina, chapel of Saint Romuald.

Outer West Market Church of Christ in Palestine, Illinois

Peer comment(s):

neutral Julia Wolter : Ich verstehe es als "Filialkirche". Hab was bei Wikipedia.de gefunden (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merklingen_(Weil_der_Stadt)), was meine Vermutung einwenig bestätigt. Da ist aber nicht viel im Web.

In dem von Harapalba genannten Kontext denke ich mittlerweile, dass es wohl mehr um die Gegenüberstellung innerer Glaube - Kirche als Institution geht.
neutral David Moore (X) : I'd say the "context" is far too nebulous to be this certain of your answer...

agree Helen Shiner : I hope the answers are somehow combined - and that we both have divined the right answer!!

neutral AllegroTrans : it may just be, but we simply don't have context
