German term
Essengelüste
German to English
Medical
Nutrition
This term appears in a questionnaire discussing eating habits and their link to obesity. I'm finding it difficult to phrase an English translation of this term, and would be grateful for any ideas. Perhaps someone has come across it before? I'm leaving towards food craving, but I'm not certain, as I know that food craving is also translated as Fresssucht...
The question:
"Wie oft heute haben Sie Essengelueste verspuert?
(Unter Essengeluesten versteht man ein starkes Verlangen nach einer bestimmten Speise oder Getraenk, wobei es schwer ist diesem zu widerstehen.)

Allesklar
: that's actually eating, Gelueste just means wanting to, but not neccessarily doing it

I know. With my suggestion one would need to specify an eating binge for chocolate or some other food

: IMHO this is what follows if you give room to your "Gelüste".

: Sorry: binge eating = Fresssucht - this is something rather different from Essensgelüste. Yes, one does use this expression for humans - even physicians do so - it's a real addiction.

Could be the title of a new Rammstein album :-)

German term (edited):
Essengelueste
food desire
I think that "desire" reflects "Gelueste".
Hunger is something stronger than "Gelust". Appetite is something weaker.
A "desire for food" would mean an in-between situation.

Essengelste
to feel peckish
"craving" or "binge eating" are far too strong - these terms already point in the direction of addiction.
I have been dealing quite a lot with such issues, having been involved in a market research survey about new medication to suppress the craving for food (i.e. deal with addiction).
