I think we have to deviate from the literal German here. This sounds like the project purpose or mission to me. Project goals would be the specific activities they implement to serve that purpose.

I agree with your answer. Project purpose seems to make the most sense. I simply can't make sense of "interpretation" in this context. How does one interpret a goal? I also think that it simply sounds like they are defining what the purpose/mission/goals of the project is/are. I like using language that is easy to understand, and project purpose fits the bill!

Another example of fake Denglish. An 'interpretation' (Auslegung) of the goal would allow several permutations and thereby negate the body text.

: Karolin Schmidt: I think they mean interpretation. The goal is then defined based on the interpretation, or the interpretation is used to clarify and avoid different understandings of the goal.

I would stick with goal and say

However it seems to be a rather new term(?) or organization specific, even the German version does not appear very often in the context.
