German term

getrennt marschieren - vereint schlagen

German to English Marketing Idioms / Maxims / Sayings slogan

DANKE EUCH!

@Paul or as we say in Austria "Prost" or - more in line with my translation - "Op uw gezonheid" :-)
Paul Cohen Dec 9, 2008:
Cheers, Silvia.
silvia glatzhofer (asker) Dec 9, 2008:
It's just as Nicole says: We have various brands of beers from several countries, all competing on the market but produced by the same group of companies.
silvia glatzhofer (asker) Dec 9, 2008:
not at all important - the group produces and sells beers
Paul Cohen Dec 9, 2008:
The source text certainly has a militaristic tone. What kinds of products does this company produce? Cluster bombs and hand grenades… or laundry detergent and shampoo? How important is the military imagery, in your opinion?

The question is how to avoid suggesting that the various brands are divided against each other.

'getrennt marschieren' does not suggest direct competition to me - I am, of course, that this does go on, Nicole, just question whether it is appropriate here. We are not told - it is up to the Asker to choose/clarify.

divided we compete - united we succeed

Weil der Spruch im Originaltext eindeutig als Anlehnung an "united we stand - divided we fall" zu erkennen ist.

agree Inge Meinzer : Genau!

Danke, Inge!
neutral Helen Shiner : I agree in what it alludes to, but 'divided' here does tend to suggest they are against one another or competing against one another. I understand it rather than they have their own pathways rather than being direct competitors./Well guessed then!

Simple example: Cat food. Whiskas, Pedigree and Sheeba are competitors on the market, right? They are all manufactured by one and the same company, Mars, Inc.//"Zielgruppen herunterbrechen" is highly non-ambiguous. Thanks, Helen!
agree Eddy Coodee : It's close enough and ... it rhymes! Great stuff!

Thanks, Eddy! Usually I am not too fond of rhyming in advertising, but mottoes are a different story... :-)
